Anniston Rehab. Architecture and Interiors by Birchfield Penuel Architects. Because I’m a photographer, wherever I go, I’m always attuned to the light. Fortif Law Office in Birmingham, Alabama. Architecture by Design Initiative. I just loved the renovation of this beautiful old building into a modern office. With no windows along the side walls, the design decisions that bring so much natural light to both top and middle floors while retaining the functionality of a law office is really clever. Plus, those ancient posts and beams cut from the original timber of this land are things of beauty. Getting to experience spaces like this one firsthand is one of the best perks of photographing architecture.

BPA Office by Birchfield Penuel Architects. This project won an AIA Honor Award in 2024. The transformation of this building from a nondescript facade to the most remarkable building on the street is…well, remarkable. It makes me happy every time I drive by it. The interior is just as great as the exterior! Thanks to @ltaylordixon for bringing me on to capture it and staying late to get the jack-o-lantern shot. Photographing some of the designs which shape the public and private spaces in which we live, work, and play has been great fun and a real honor. IMO this was the most badass submission.

One more favorite from my @gardenandgun photo shoot with Whitley Esteban of @studiotreprojects . What you don’t see in this photo is how much WORK went into getting this garden ready for this ONE picture (hat tip to Whitley’s mom). And then the sun dropped right into place, I pressed the shutter, and we were off to the next one. (Okay, I pressed the shutter a bunch of times, but you know what I mean.)

This shoot was such a tight collaboration between me, Whitley, and @lindsfleege —who was the ultimate utility player all day. Lindsay’s eye and her sense of what the magazine wanted were essential. And of course, Whitley opened up her home, helped me move all her furniture around, and carried her surfboard back and forth across the garden until 💫 . Thank you! 🙏🏼

Max and Alex are two brothers from Nashville who play music together and, for this day, were in our photo shoot. One of the reasons I love working with folks who have their thing and just happen to be in an ad campaign is that once they finish setting up their instruments, they can play an impromptu show! I have heard of photographers hiring a DJ to set the tone on set for pro athletes and celebrities. But a live rock band? Come on!

\n

Revolution Pictures—also from Nashville—did a bang-up job producing this campaign. We had crew from Nashville, Atlanta, New York, Birmingham, and places in between. REVO pulled all these folks together into a unit, which was no small feat. Last year I had the pleasure to photograph a campaign for T-Mobile as part of their focus on small towns and rural America. It was a 2-day project with a large crew, multiple locations, and many moving parts. It was right in my wheelhouse, but the scale was a level up from anything I had shot before. Bryan Stevenson of EJI at the Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Alabama. Mr Stevenson is someone I greatly admire—this is an understatement, but I’m at a loss for words to describe my respect for him, his work, and the work of the organization he founded. He has chosen a difficult but important path and has given much of himself in the pursuit of equal justice under the law. My pictures accompanied an interview in the Washington Post Magazine (I’ll link in bio). I am grateful to Dudley Brooks for the assignment and chance to meet a hero. Though, I played it cool and (regrettably) did not have him sign my copy of his book.

This is what it looks like to write braille and check your work. Last year, before the pandemic, I had the opportunity to photograph a memorable, precocious girl at Alabama’s School for the Blind. Her energy was boundless as she bounced from typing to explaining how much she loves to read. The book in the last picture is a great children’s book, and what they do is rebind it with a clear braille sheet atop each page so that as the child reads the braille, the parent can follow along. Super cool. This was shot for the Alabama Power Foundation Annual Report, designed by @cayennecreative.

Leila & Brit. We went way down a rabbit hole discussing personality and coupling via birth order and the enneagram. Brit taught me the word ‘enjambment.’ Leila teased a discussion of Semiotics but I balked. We talked about Alabama, politics, and an organization Brit started called Bevy (@thebhambevy). Brit reminded me that during college, she was one of -seven people- in the Samford Democrats, and she continues that kind of long-shot, dedicated advocacy to this day. I hope she runs for office one day—she will have my vote.
